Description of the Resource: This brick house was designed by R. Brognard Okie in 1939 as a rental property for William Read. It is situated on a wooded lot at the end of a long driveway and is among a group of three small buildings adjacent to the Schuylkill Expressway and Schuylkill River. This house has a large, square plan and is topped with a side-gable roof. Its main façade is oriented north and it has two gabled dormer windows and one, second story shed roofed wall dormer. A porch on the southeast corner was enclosed. The building’s first level is partially set into the hillside, making the rear of the house 1-1/2 stories while the front of the house is 2-1/2 stories. One large chimney rises from the center of the house. Okie designed four rental properties for Read in 1939, three of which were built. (8/2012) One of a group of three brick houses built as rental properties by William Reed and designed by R. Brognard Okie. They are now located close to the Schuylkill Expressway.
