1862 Aloha Ln

Date of Construction: ca. 1913-1920
Original Architect: T. Mitchel Hastings
Original Owner: Howard Wood, Jr.
Description of the Resource: This large stone house was constructed in 1914 in the middle of a large site at the bend of the Schuylkill River in the northern corner of the Township. By 1851, the property, which at the time was only 9 acres, belonged to Henry Newberry. It belonged to someone else in the 1870s before being purchased by Percival Roberts as part of his 90-acre Bryn Tyddyn estate by 1893. By 1913, Howard Wood Jr. owned 92 acres. Soon after, approximately forty acres was sold, leaving 52 acres for Wood to build “Aloha.” He kept the property until he passed away in the 1970s. In 1974, Wood’s grandchildren set aside 26 acres along the river bend to be conserved by the Riverbed Environmental Educational Center. The house, now on a 7-acre lot, is still privately owned. Designed by T. Mitchel Hastings in 1914, the Colonial Revival mansion has a rear-facing L-shaped plan. It is 2 ½ stories tall and has a side-gabled roof with paired chimneys on the end-gables. The main, south-facing, block is six bays long and has a pedimented entry porch supported by four columns covering the first level of the two central bays. There are four gabled dormers and a one-story, flat-roofed wing on both the eastern and western ends of the main block. A 2 ½ story wing extends northward from the eastern end of the rear façade. It has a one-story wrap-around porch, one end-gabled chimney, and three dormers on the roof. The rear façade of the main block has a center gable over the rear entrance bay that opens onto the patio of an in-ground pool. Also on the property are a 1 ½ story, four-bay garage with living space above and several outbuildings and sheds. (8/2012)
