20 Berwick Rd

Date of Construction: ca. 1900
Original Architect: William L. Price
Original Owner: William L. Price
Description of the Resource: This large and finely detailed Tudor Revival home was designed and built by its owner, William Lightfoot Price, around 1900. (The house is visible on the 1900 atlas.) Price was a prominent architect in the developing Philadelphia railroad suburbs, having designed many residences, both private and for the developers Wendell & Smith. This house was built during the period of suburbanization of rural Merion, which formerly consisted of large estates. The Tudor style—in this excellent example including intricate half-timbering, multiple steep gables, and a massive chimney—suggests a sense of rustic hominess and simultaneous grandeur, by invoking the countryside homes of England. This style was a common choice for the wealthy in the bucolic commuter suburbs at the turn of the century. Later in the 20th century, this house was the last residence of renowned author Chaim Potok.
